Description:

The TemporalScanner Thermometer is a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. Advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead. The TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults. The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment.

Features:

Gentle Stroke of Forehead captures naturally emitted heat from skin over temporal artery

Red LED lights and soft beep indicate correct scan

Takes 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate

Arterial Heat Balance computers the correct temperature

4Very Easy to useMar 11, 2010
This product is very simple to use. We had a lot of fun with it. Although none of us had a fever, we did get a few erratic readings. All you have to do is start with the thermometer at the center of your forehead and move it to the side at your hairline without lifting it up. You have to continue to hold the button in while doing this. My kids are checking their temperatures all day long now. Temperatures of the air around you can have an effect on your reading so be sure to use correctly and read all of the instructions. Another big thing is to remember to take off the clear cap. It really doesn't work with it on! Please read my full review at [...].

5a must for every baby shower wish listMar 11, 2010
I was very excited to receive the Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer. As a mom for over 18 years, I've used ear thermometers as well as standard digital thermometers orally and under the arm and never really liked them. The Temporal Scanner Thermometer was so easy to use; just stroke across the forehead while holding the button and voila you have an accurate reading. No concerns about getting the child to sit still for an underarm temp, no worry about is the thermometer under their tongue and no extra pain when a child is ill with an earache. I so wish the Temporal Scanner Thermometer had been available when my children were babies but it will still come in quite handy with the adults, teens and children in my home.

When I first tested the thermometer I was getting a low reading but then I read the instructions (always important with a newly acquired product) and realized that in order to work accurately the thermometer needed to warm to the ambient room temperature since it had been in a cold UPS truck all day. I tried the thermometer on both myself and Theresa, my 11 year old daughter. It was simple and easy to use. I then decided to put the Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer to the test; I figured if a 10 year old boy could read and follow the instructions, any adult could do the same. I gave John the Quick Start Card; he read the directions and then easily and accurately took my temperature.

The one downside to this forehead thermometer is the packaging. It is not packed in a cardboard box but rather in a hard plastic hanging display case that required a pair of scissors and muscles of steel to open. It does come with a clear plastic cover for the probe so it can be easily stored in a drawer or cabinet without fear of being damaged. The Exergen Temporal Scanncer Thermometer comes with a fresh 9 volt battery, a Quick Start Card (with illustrations) and a booklet of instructions. Not only does the booklet explain how to use the thermometer but it also explains why a temporal artery temperature is more accurate, how the Temporal Scanner Thermometer works and explains clinical information about normal body vs. normal temporal artery temperature.

This is an amazing invention! The package contained a battery, the thermometer itself and an instruction booklet. It was very easy to use. You simply place the top of the thermometer on your child's (or baby's) forehead and push the button. You will hear a quiet beeping sound and then you can easily check the digital reading to see if the child has a fever. It is quick, easy and accurate.

This thermometer is recommended by many doctors and is also sold in places like: Wal-Mart, Costco and Toys R Us.

One task most new moms dread is taking their baby's temperature. When I had my oldest, they taught us how to when I was in the hospital and our discharge kit included a glass rectal thermometer. Of course you not only had to know how to insert it, but how to read it. Baby wasn't fond of the operation either. Next, the ear thermometers were the thing, and I guess they still sell them. My doctor's office used them for a while, but quit, saying they weren't accurate. I just thought they were expensive. I bought a digital thermometer and used it under my kids arms, or, when they got older, in their mouths. Still, my preferred method of temperature taking was to kiss their forehead and declare that they didn't have a fever, had a low fever, or a high fever. I really didn't see the need to know more than that most of the time and the in-exact nature of my method did not matter.

I recently received a free review sample of the latest thing in thermometers, an Exergen TemporalScanner Thermometer. I wish it had been in my discharge kit when I had my first baby, and it will be the device we will use here to measure temperature. You simply uncap the device (my kids have found that it doesn't work well if you forget this step) and swipe it across the patient's forehead. The temperature is displayed digitally.

Does it work? Well, at this moment, my entire family is healthy, so we all should have temps at or near 98.6. I didn't check us with the other thermometers because I couldn't find them, and besides, my test subjects don't like them. I went to each person and scanned his/her forehead five times, one right after the other, so presumably there should have been no change, as each person was seated when it was his/her turn. Here are the results:

Dad: 98.2, 97.9, 97.8, 98.1, 98.3
17 y.o.: 97.9, 98.0, 97.6, 97.4, 98.0
14 y.o. 99.6, 98.6, 98.5, 98.3, 98.3
5 y.o.: 99, 99, 98.9, 99.2, 99

My conclusions: If you need a thermometer to take your child's temperature to see if she/he has a fever, and having the thermometer off by a tenth of a degree or so isn't going to make a difference, then I'd say this is the device for you. It is big enough that is isn't going to get lost in a drawer and in the real world, for taking the temperature of a sick child, it doesn't really matter if the "real" temperature is 102.8 or 103. It is easy to use, and if your child doesn't want to cooperate, holding anyone below the age of about 10 still enough to use this long enough to use it, should be possible, whereas most other methods require at least a modicum of cooperation from the child. Using other types of thermometers may give results just as inconsistent as these (or more so if affected by things such as ambient temperature or food/drink intake, or the child not holding the thermometer properly in his/her mouth). Amazon.com sells them for [...] Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer MODEL# 2000C which I consider very reasonable for never having to fight to take a child's temperature.

If you are charting basal body temps as a method of family planning, I'm not sure if this would give consistent enough results for that. (If you aren't familiar with temperatures and Natural Family Planning, you are looking for a 4/10 degree rise in your temp, taken before you get out of bed in the morning). I'm not ovulating regularly anymore so I didn't use myself as a test subject. If anyone has tried it for that use, I'd love to hear about it.

5Love it!Mar 11, 2010
The thermometer we had died years ago and I've been using my trusty hand to check his temperature.

I received this and tried it out immediately and discovered that it's EASY to use.

The thermometer comes with a 9 v battery which made me excited. (I know I'm weird!)

It comes with a user's guide and it's easy to follow. It is lightweight and easy to hold.

You simply remove the cap and place the tip on the forehead. Press down the button and move the thermometer across the forehead to the hairline--while holding down the button. Release the button when you reach the hairline and it tells you the temperature.

It claims to be more accurate than ear thermometers. I can believe that. I remember my old daycare teacher days trying to use the ear thermometers. They can be too large to place into the ear of very small children and you have to purchase the disposable tips.

I like this type of thermometer better than the underarm thermometers as well. Holding feverish children and trying to keep them still for an underarm reading wasn't very fun either!

Another great point about this thermometer is NO MERCURY!

I see a lot of value in this type of thermometer. I imagine we'll be finding dozens of reasons to check his temperature in the coming weeks.
